5 Things You Absolutely Need in Your Hurricane Food Kit

1. Water

We always think about buying enough bottled water to make it through the storm, but remember your water may not be safe to drink/use after the storm. FEMA recommends at least one gallon of water per person (and pet) each day for hydrating and preparing foods. Stock up!

2. Fruits

(apples, oranges, bananas, fruit cups, applesauce, dried fruit, etc.)

Fruit cups are great for keeping fruit on hand without worrying about it going bad after a few days. If you prefer fresh fruit, be sure to rinse/slice/prepare ahead of time in case you lose power and/or water.

 3. Vegetables

(broccoli, cucumbers, carrots, celery, all canned veggies, etc.)

Canned vegetables are the best option in the midst of a storm. I know it’s probably hard to imagine eating room temperature green beans straight from the can, but it’s safe! Most canned vegetables are pre-cooked, which helps when power lines are down.

4. Protein

(canned tuna/salmon/beans, peanut butter, almonds, walnuts, etc.)

Things like canned/packaged tuna may not taste the same without all the mayo, but it’s safe to eat without having to worry about proper cooking or refrigeration. C’mon… crackers can only hold you over for so long.

5. Utensils

(manual can opener, hand sanitizer, paper plates, plastic utensils, napkins, etc.)

If the tap water is not safe for drinking during/after the storm, then it’s also not safe for things like washing hands and cleaning dishes. Be prepared with hand sanitizer, disposable plates and utensils.

Stay safe,
